In-demand skills

The Australian Government’s Jobs and Skills Report 2024 outlines in-demand occupations in Australia and projections for future years. In-demand industries include healthcare and social assistance, construction and engineering, education and training, IT and cybersecurity, and agriculture, with an array of skill sets required to fill vacancies in these fields.

The State of the Victorian Labour Market Report 2024 outlines a similar picture for employment demand in Victoria, and also states that almost all of the expected demand for workers will be in jobs that require Vocational Education and Training (VET) or higher education qualifications.

Healthcare

Australia’s need for health professionals has continued to grow and there are opportunities for registered nurses, general practitioners and resident medical officers.

Other in-demand roles include allied health professions like occupational therapists and physiotherapists.

Education and social assistance

Australia is facing a shortage of teachers, particularly in early childhood and pre-primary schools. Additionally, social assistance roles, including social workers, child care workers and aged and disability carers, are in high demand.

Construction and engineering

Many roles in the industries of construction and engineering were identified as being in shortage.

Construction managers, carpenters and joiners, electricians, civil engineers, and architectural, building and surveying technicians were identified as some of the most in-demand occupations in Australia.

Victoria’s Big Build

With Victoria’s population projected to reach 10 million by 2051, Victoria's Big Build is delivering more than 180 major road and rail projects to keep Victorians moving in the decades to come.

Victoria’s Big Build graduate program offers a 2-year paid program for university graduates across a wide range of disciplines – international graduates are eligible if they hold full Australian working rights for the entire duration of the program, for example, if they hold a temporary graduate visa.

For more information on the Big Build graduate programs and eligibility, please see the Victoria’s Big Build graduate program website.

Information Technology

Shortages exist in professional occupations in information technology, particularly software engineers, developer programmers, and software testers. The Australian Computer Society provides resources and networking opportunities for emerging IT professionals.

In business, there is a particular need for advertising and marketing professionals, human resource professionals and public relations and sales managers.
