In Australia you are not required by law to carry proof of identification (ID), but you may find it useful in some situations. For example, you may need to prove you are over 18 to buy alcohol or enter some venues.

Banks and other organisations may also require proof of your identity to set up accounts and services in your name.

Driving a car, truck or riding a motorcycle

If you drive a car or truck or ride a motorcycle in Victoria you must have a valid driver's licence and have it with you whenever you are driving. If you have a driver's licence from another country and if it is in English or translated into English you may be able to use it.  Read the Overseas drivers page on the VicRoads website.

If you need to get a licence in Victoria, find out more on the VicRoads website.
